2nd Illustration for "The Outsider" This one is based around the quote: Maman used to say that you can always find something to be happy about.

Pretty sure you can't when in jail.

1st draft and with some anatomical problems.

Outsider Composition

Illustrations to accompany the book cover. I have decided to incorporate a quote from the book for each illustration. I also enjoyed the poster quality/aspect of the composition and I intend to carry this across the other 2 illustrations.

This is the one I have decided on for a final as the quote on the top lines up with the foot of the character.

Will fix the unfortunate problem with the chair.

Tutorial Summary

Progress tutorial with Lorenzo, summary of concerns. (will scan in the sheet when I receive it)

• Finish one project by the end of the week.
  
• Sort out time management problems.
  
• Stop letting other projects distracts me and pushing other projects aside.
• Have at least one comic page finished that I can print out and play around with composition. (Whether this means blowing up the images or cropping them)
• I'm doing the research, I'm just not using it.
  

Over all, the tutorial was useful for me to see exactly where I am and what I need to do if I don't want to be panicking 2 weeks from hand in.

Finished 1st image which will be accompanied by a quote from the book.

Shade and Detail

Preview of the shade and detail which is coming on quite well.

Just building up detail on the face before heading to the suit.

Line Art

Line work before I give it a little bit more detail, shade and the eventual placing on a page with accompanying text.
I changed the head as I couldn't get the chin right on the last one. It's not as realistic looking as the illustration on the front but I don't think that's a problem. As long as the three that go inside the book are consistent then I don't see this as a problem.

Meursault.2

So another part of the "outsider" brief is 3 illustrations that accompany the book design. I started (and pretty much finished) an illustration of Meursault pointing a gun at the viewer. However, I felt this was a weak piece and that I can do better than that.

Work In Progress from sketch to ink~

Using the photograph as reference, I mark out the frame for the character.

Next, I add the bulk of his body.

After that I roughly start to place where his clothing will sit and very rudimentary facial features.

Finally, the rough sketch before I beginning to digitally ink it.

Image is flipped to make sure the facial feature are consistent and not wonky and the inking begins!

The Outsider - Still tweaking

I was not happy with the type I had chosen for the outsider brief. I'm going to spend today tweaking and I will have it it finished by tonight. I've also dropped the illustration on the back as my direction has changed slightly.

25 expressions for the two characters for the 12 page November in the North comic.

Just some rough sketches to begin with. The angry face needs re working (It's aged him, rather than made him angry.)

I really enjoy doing small exercises like these. They're helpful to establish the character and their traits. What works for one character won't necessarily work for another.
